New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
