Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
