England along with Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

Ireland and the Scots also share a group once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the groups play out according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, holders South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
